Bethany slips past GCC, runs win streak to 10

GROVE CITY, PA, April 17, 2002--On the strength of solid pitching and defense, the Lady Wolverine softball team flirted with upsetting three-time defending league champion Bethany College in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader, but the nationally-ranked Bison managed a sweep by scores of 2-0 and 4-2 at the College Field.

Starting pitchers Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) and Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) held hard-hitting Bethany to nine hits and a .188 batting average (9-48) in the twin bill.  The Bison, who recently defeated the nation's No. 1 team, Muskingum College, entered the week hitting .334 and averaging 10 hits per game.

In the opener, only four Bison reached base through the first five innings with none advancing past second.  Bethany scored the game's only runs in the sixth when 3B Janice Masters' one-out double plated two.

Bison hurler Rachael Schafer took a perfect game into the seventh before junior CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and Atwood led off with back-to-back singles.  Schafer worked out of the jam, getting the final out with her seventh strikeout of the game.  LeVake allowed four hits, while fanning three and walking two.

The Lady Wolverines (1-12, 0-4 PAC) out-hit Bethany (20-7, 6-0 PAC) in the nightcap, 6-5, with Smith and freshman SS Rachel Romance (East Springfield, PA/Northwestern) collecting two hits each.  Grove City took a 2-1 lead in the third after freshman LF Abigail Russell (Shelbina, MO/South Shelby), freshman DH Katie Gaskill (Butler, PA/Knoch) and Smith opened the inning with three straight singles.  Russell scored when Atwood reached base on an error at third base and Smith scored on a mishandled grounder to short.

Atwood surrendered four runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out one.
