GCC snaps skid with split at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, PA, April 24, 2002--Sophomore pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) fanned 16 Waynesburg batters to help the Grove City College Lady Wolverines end a 13-game losing streak with a 5-1 win in the opener of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Waynesburg pulled out a 5-0 victory.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the first game by posting a pair of fourth-inning runs. The Lady Wolverines then put the game away with three tallies in the top of the seventh.

Freshman right fielder Steph Briggs (Grove City, PA/Grove City) paced the Lady Wolverine offense by going 3-for-4. Atwood singled twice as did batterymate Kassie Hayes (Grove City, PA/Grove City). Shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, PA/Northwestern) scored twice.

In the circle, Atwood had at least two strikeouts in every inning except the fifth. She permitted just five hits and one walk.

Senior pitcher Laura LeVake (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) allowed just two earned runs in seven innings during game two. LeVake struck out three batters, moving past the 200-strikeout plateau for her career.

Second baseman Katie Gaskill (Butler, PA/Knoch) doubled for Grove City.
