Grove City falls short against D-II foe Slippery Rock
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with NCAA Division II Slippery Rock Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-1 and 4-2. The second game was called after six innings due to darkness.
Grove City dropped to 2-6 with the losses while Slippery Rock improved to 5-7.
In the opener, Grove City tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first as senior center fielder Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) singled, moved to third on a single from junior shortstop Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) and then came home on a groundout by senior third baseman Elena Cecchini (Avella, Pa./Avella).
However, SRU posted single runs in the second and third innings and then broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning.
Freshman Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in four innings. Flick fanned four while freshman reliever Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) allowed no earned runs in three innings.
Grove City fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but rallied to tie the game. Sophomore right fielder Steph Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) cracked a leadoff double and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Cecchini drove Briggs home with a grounder to second.
Three runs in the top of the sixth allowed The Rock to reclaim the lead but Grove City mounted a sixth-inning rally. Sophomore Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) doubled to center to lead off the inning. Romance then stole third and scored on Briggs' fielder's choice. After senior first baseman Rachel Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) was hit by a pitch, Briggs and pinch runner Sarah Babb (Cranberry, Pa./Cranberry) each moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch.
However, SRU escaped the jam and completed the sweep. Atwood took the setback for Grove City, striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Sarah Smith recorded the final two outs.
Junior second baseman Katie Gaskill (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) added a single for Grove City in the nightcap.
