Grove City splits twinbill with non-conference rival Allegheny
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Allegheny Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Wolverines (4-8) dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener before bouncing back for an 8-1 victory over the Gators (3-10).
In the first game, junior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) allowed just three hits and fanned 12 batters. However, a wild pitch in the top of the fifth allowed Allegheny right fielder Sarah Johnston to score the game's lone run.
Grove City loaded the bases in the seventh as sophomore Steph Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) opened the inning with a single to right. Freshman Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Boyers) followed with a pinch-hit single. A sacrifice advanced Flick and pinch runner Martha Shaw (Dayton, Va./Providence Christian). Sophomore Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) reached on a hit batsman with two outs but Allegheny pitcher Tracie Gaydos worked out of the jam.
A seven-run third inning vaulted Grove City to the victory in the nightcap. The Lady Wolverines sent a dozen batters to the plate in the inning, combining five hits with a pair of errors. Senior Elena Cecchini (Avella, Pa./Avella) opened the inning with a single and advanced on a sacrifice by senior Rachel Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby).
Senior Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) followed with a single and junior Katie Gaskill (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) walked to load the bases. Atwood singled in Cecchini to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Smith.
An error scored two more runs while Cecchini followed with a run-scoring single. Flick scored Grove City's seventh run on another Allegheny error.
Grove City tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth as Smith and pinch hitter Valerie Kuntz (Erie, Pa./McDowell) stroked singles. Smith eventually came home on a wild pitch.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired her second consecutive complete game and earned her first collegiate win. Smith struck out two and did not allow an earned run.
Grove City begins Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday against visiting Waynesburg.
