Lady Wolverines split twinbill at Thiel
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team remained at .500 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a doubleheader split at PAC rival Thiel Thursday at Riverside Park. Grove City (7-11, 3-3 PAC) pulled out a 3-1 victory in the opener before falling 10-0 in the second game, which lasted only five innings.
In the opener, Grove City fell behind 1-0 in the fourth but rallied with a three-run fifth. Sophomore Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) opened the inning with a single. Russell would score on a two-out triple from junior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren). Sophomore shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) followed with a run-scoring single, putting Grove City on top.
Freshman DH Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) belted a triple to center, sending Romance home with Grove City's third run. Both Atwood and Flick added singles as part of their two-hit afternoons.
Atwood picked up the win in the circle, limiting Thiel to just four hits. Atwood also struck out nine batters and did not allow a runner to reach base until the fourth inning.
Atwood and senior Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) each had singles in the nightcap as Thiel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the loss, pitching four innings. Flick pitched the fifth.
