Grove City, Pitt-Bradford split doubleheader Saturday night
BRADFORD, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford Saturday night, bring the Lady Wolverines' overall record to 8-12. Grove City claimed a 6-4 victory in the opener before falling to Pitt-Bradford 6-0 in the nightcap.
Freshman DH Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) sparked the Grove City offense with a triple, single and three runs batted in while senior center fielder Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) went 3-for-4. Flick's seventh-inning triple scored Smith and Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) and highlighted the Lady Wolverines' three-run inning.
Grove City tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Atwood doubled and scored on a single from senior first baseman Rachel Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby). The Lady Wolverines then surged ahead in the sixth as sophomore shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) doubled and scored on a Flick single.
Flick eventually came home on a double by senior third baseman Elena Cecchini (Avella, Pa./Avella).
Atwood picked up the win, striking out eight and allowing two earned runs in seven innings.
In the nightcap, Bradford jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Flick en route to the win. Smith, Romance and sophomore Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) all collected singles. Flick allowed two earned runs in four innings while freshman Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) pitched two innings of relief.
