Lady Wolverines sweep Wash. and Jeff.
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Washington and Jefferson, winning by scores of 4-1 and 10-2.
The Lady Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener when sophomore right fielder Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) reached on an error in the bottom of the third. With two outs, junior second baseman Katie Gaskill (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) cracked a single that drove in Russell.
In the fourth, sophomore shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) singled and scored on a groundout from senior third baseman Elena Cecchini (Avella, Pa./Avella). Later in the inning, a Russell single scored both freshman DH Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and senior first baseman Rachel Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby).
Senior center fielder Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) belted a double in the first game as the Lady Wolverines collected seven total hits.
Junior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) allowed no earned runs and struck out nine President batters in seven innings, improving to 5-6 on the season.
Washington and Jefferson (3-18, 1-5 PAC) secured a 1-0 lead after three innings. But Smith tripled to lead off the fourth and an Atwood single tied the game at 1-1. A pair of President errors in the fourth gave Grove City a 2-1 lead.
Grove City posted three more runs in the sixth as Cecchini singled in Romance and Abigail Russell and junior Sarah Babb (Cranberry, Pa./Cranberry) each knocked in runs with sacrifice bunts. The Lady Wolverines then broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning.
Gaskill, who went 2-for-5 in game two, singled and came home on a Romance double to put Grove City up 6-2. Romance and Atwood each scored on a two-run double to left by freshman DH Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex). An error allowed Abigail Russell and Stefanak to both score with two outs.
Flick (3-4) earned the victory, allowing no earned runs in five innings. Atwood struck out four in two innings of relief. She now has 89 strikeouts in 74 innings and has a 1.89 earned run average.
Grove City (10-12 overall) currently sits in second place in the PAC. The top two teams get byes in the opening round of next week's conference tournament. Bethany (8-0) has home-field advantage in the tournament.
