Bethany takes two from Grove City

BETHANY W. Va. -- The Grove City College softball team closed regular season Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday at 5-5 by dropping both ends of a doubleheader at national powerhouse Bethany. The Bison claimed a 10-0, 5-inning win in the opener, then came back for a 4-3 victory in the second game.

In the nightcap, Grove City jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) belted a two-run double, scoring senior center fielder Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and junior second baseman Katie Gaskill (Sarver, Pa./Knoch). Freshman pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) followed with a single that scored Romance.

However, the Lady Wolverines (10-14) could not add to their lead, leaving a pair of runners on base in the second, third and fourth innings. Bethany, meanwhile, tied the game in the top of the fifth and pulled ahead in the sixth. The Bison were considered the visiting team in the second game.

Romance cracked her second double of the game with two outs in the seventh but was stranded in scoring position.

Gaskill and Sarah Smith each had a pair of hits for Grove City. Smith took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Bethany jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Grove City starter Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) en route to the 10-0 win in five innings. Sarah Smith pitched three innings of relief for Grove City. Senior third baseman Elena Cecchini (Avella, Pa./Avella) and freshman DH Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) both stroked singles for Grove City.
