Thiel rallies past Lady Wolverines in PAC tourney opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting Thiel in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday afternoon.
Third-seeded Grove City falls into the consolation bracket and will play at 4 p.m. Friday at Bethany College. No. 6 Thiel will face No. 2 Westminster in the winner's bracket semifinals.
Grove City (10-15) led 3-0 after five innings and carried a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh. Grove City pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) retired the first two batters in the seventh. However, Thiel center fielder Jess Peterson reached on a hit batsman -- after the play was originally ruled a foul ball -- and Tomcat second baseman Amanda Swanson followed with a two-run homer to left, putting Thiel on top.
The Lady Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as senior Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led off with a double. Atwood singled and moved to second when Smith was tagged out at the plate. Sophomore shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) followed with a base hit and Atwood came home when Romance got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Grove City's lead grew to 3-0 in the third as Smith singled and advanced on a sacrifice by second baseman Katie Gaskill (Sarver, Pa./Knoch). After an Atwood single, Romance grounded out, scoring Smith. A Thiel error brought Atwood in with Grove City's third run.
Tomcat first baseman Jen Stiveson followed a Swanson double in the sixth with a run-scoring single that cut Grove City's lead to 3-1. Stiveson scored on a Grove City error.
Atwood struck out six and did not walk a batter in seven innings. Thiel junior Jen Troyan picked up the win, allowing seven hits in seven innings.
