Grove City slips past Waynesburg in 11 innings

BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Grove City College women's softball team remained alive in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Friday afternoon with a 5-4, 11-inning victory over Waynesburg in loser's bracket action.

Sophomore catcher Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the 11th to help keep Grove City (11-15) alive.

The Lady Wolverines trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the 10th. By virtue of the international tie-breaker, senior center fielder Ellie Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) started on second base and with one out, moved to third on a sacrifice fly from junior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren). With two outs, sophomore shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) beat out an infield single, sending Smith in with the game-tying run.

In the 11th, Cozad started on second and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from senior first baseman Rachel Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby), who went 2-for-4 in the game.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Atwood and Romance both scored on Waynesburg errors. Waynesburg countered with two runs in the top of the fourth but Grove City bounced back in the home half of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

Cozad and Russell opened the inning with singles. Cozad moved to third when Russell was erased on a force play and then scored on a wild pitch.

Atwood struck out 11 in 11 innings to pick up the win. Waynesburg left 17 runners on base. Smith also doubled as part of her 2-for-5 afternoon.

Grove City faces Thiel at 9 a.m. Saturday in the consolation bracket. Thiel has won two of three games from Grove City, including a 4-3 win at Grove City in a tournament play-in game Wednesday.
