Grove City opens season with shutout win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) fired a four-hit shutout and also went 3-for-4 at the plate Wednesday afternoon to help the Grove City College softball team pick up a 7-0 win over visiting La Roche in the Wolverines' 2004 opener.

La Roche held a 2-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader but rain forced the game to be called in the third inning.

In the opener, Grove City (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Atwood drove in junior third baseman Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) with a single to left and freshman center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) scored on a groundout from junior left fielder Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby).

Rice, who doubled and singled in the game, scored Grove City's third run in the fifth inning on an error. She then preserved the shutout in the top of the sixth with a diving catch in center with two outs, leaving La Roche runners stranded on second and third.

Grove City put the game away with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning as sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) started the rally with a one-out double. Freshman catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) drove Flick in with a single while Cozad and Rice followed with doubles. Atwood's single capped the inning.

Atwood struck out six batters and walked just one. Shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) added a double for Grove City.

Grove City will host Penn State Altoona Thursday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
