Bethany takes two from Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Bethany swept both ends of a doubleheader from Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at College Field.

Bethany (14-9, 2-0 PAC) won the opener 7-1, then picked up an 11-3, 5-inning win in the second game. The Bison jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener, aided by a pair of Grove City errors. Bethany extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the third before Grove City (1-2, 0-2 PAC) broke through in its half of the third.

Freshman Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) each singled and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from junior Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby). Junior Stephanie Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) singled up the middle to score Rice.

However, Bethany pitcher Romney Waters held Grove City in check the rest of the way. Atwood went 3-for-4 at the plate but took the loss in the circle for the Wolverines. She allowed five earned runs in seven innings. Atwood struck out five Bethany batters.

Bethany used another fast start in the nightcap to take command. The Bison took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, then blew the game open with a nine-run second inning.

Junior Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) doubled and singled while Rice also doubled. Atwood and freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) each had run-scoring singles. Carlson also pitched 2 2-3 innings of relief, allowing one run.

Starter Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss, allowing nine earned runs in 1 1-3 innings.
