Grove City tops Thiel twice

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 3-2 overall and evened its Presidents' Athletic Conference record at 2-2 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Thiel Tuesday afternoon.

Grove City secured a 3-2 win in the opener, then held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) did not allow an earned run in her complete game outing in the opener. In the second game, freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) spun a four-hitter. Neither pitcher walked a batter.

In the opener, sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) cracked a pair of run-scoring singles while Atwood doubled and singled. Freshman catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also doubled and singled while junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) added a double.

Grove City grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, then extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning before Thiel cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth with two unearned runs off Atwood. Thiel was the designated home team in the opener.

Carlson helped spark the Wolverine attack in the second game by going 2-for-3. Bogusz added two more hits while freshman center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) doubled in the first inning and scored on a Romance single.

Grove City earned its second run in the nightcap when Carlson led off with a single and then moved to second on Stephanie Briggs' (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) sacrifice. Sophomore Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) followed with a single. Carlson then came home on the first of Bogusz's two hits.

Grove City returns to action next Tuesday, April 13, against visiting Pitt-Bradford.
