Wolverines sweep Jackets; win streak reaches 4

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team swept visiting Waynesburg in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at College Field, improving to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the PAC.

Grove City pulled out a 1-0, 9-inning victory in the opener, then recorded a 4-3 win in the second game. Grove City has won four straight overall and in the PAC.

Sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) capped a 4-for-4 effort in the nightcap with a game-winning single to deep right-center field in the bottom of the seventh, scoring senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren). In the opener, Flick's two-out double in the top of the ninth drove in junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) with the eventual game-winner.

In the opener, Atwood took a no-hitter into the top of the eighth before Waynesburg's Nicole January opened the inning with a bunt single. She allowed just two hits and struck out six in nine innings, earning her third win of the year.

Sophomore first baseman Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) singled twice in the first game.

Grove City fell behind 1-0 in the first inning of the nightcap but assembled a three-run fourth inning. Freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) put Grove City up with a two-run single that scored Flick and freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Stefanak came home on a subsequent throwing error. Waynesburg rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh against Carlson, who relieved starting pitcher Flick in the fifth. Atwood replaced Carlson and got the final two outs of the inning.

With two outs in the seventh, Atwood and Romance had consecutive singles before Flick's game-winning hit scored Atwood. Atwood earned the victory in relief, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Flick, who also tripled, pitched five innings and allowed just three hits and one run. Carlson pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Grove City visits Penn State Altoona Monday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader.
