Grove City extends win streak to 6

ALTOONA, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team extended its winning streak to six games Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of host Penn State Altoona at Ivyside Park. Grove City (7-2) picked up a 3-0 win in the opener, then secured a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

The win streak is Grove City's longest since winning six straight in the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship season of 1998.

Senior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) fired a one-hit shutout in Monday's opener, her second straight shutout. She struck out five in raising her record to 5-1 on the season. Atwood earned the save in the second game in relief of winning pitcher Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau).

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the opener with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Freshman Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) drove in classmate Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) with a one-out double to put Grove City ahead. Rice then scored on a single by freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Grove City added a third run in the seventh as junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) tripled and scored on a single from sophomore Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex).

The Wolverines took command of the second game with a five-run outburst in the second as Stefanak, Rice and junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each roped run-scoring hits. Romance and Cozad both scored on wild pitches as Grove City sent 11 batters to the plate.

Flick took a shutout into the seventh before Altoona pushed home a pair of runs. She allowed just four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Rice finished the game 3-for-4 with a double while Stefanak went 2-for-3.

Grove City visits Westminster Tuesday afternoon for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
