Wolverines split at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westminster Tuesday afternoon, bringing Grove City's PAC record to 5-3. Grove City (8-3 overall) won the opener 2-0 before dropping a 9-0 decision in the second game. The nightcap lasted just five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule.

Senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) fired her third consecutive shutout in the opener, limiting Westminster (23-8, 6-2 PAC) to just five hits. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored Grove City's first run of the game.

In the top of the first, Atwood singled with two outs and then advanced to second base after catching Westminster's defense off-guard. Junior Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) followed with a run-scoring single, putting Grove City up 1-0. Grove City doubled its lead in the top of the fourth as sophomore Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) scored on an error.

Westminster brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but Atwood fanned Heather Gurgiolo to end the game.

Westminster stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of game two and rolled to the abbreviated victory. Atwood doubled while Romance, freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each had singles.

Freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the loss, allowing five earned runs and ten hits in five innings.

Grove City will host Division II Slippery Rock Wednesday at 3 p.m.
