Slippery Rock nips Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Slippery Rock University rallied past Grove City for a 4-3 victory Wednesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at College Field.

Grove City (8-4) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) belted a two-run homer to left-center field, her first home run of the season.

Division II Slippery Rock (14-24) cut the lead in the half in the top of the third, then took the lead with a two-run sixth inning. Grove City bounced back to tie the game as freshman center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) led off with a single, moved to second on a Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) sacrifice and scored on Allison Atwood's (Warren, Pa./Warren) single to left.

However, The Rock scored off Atwood in the top of the seventh to earn its third straight victory.

Atwood fell to 6-2, allowing three earned runs in seven innings. She allowed just three hits. At the plate, Atwood accounted for two of Grove City's six hits.

Laura Campbell earned the win for Slippery Rock while Courtney Conron got the save. Grove City hosts Penn State Altoona Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.
