Grove City splits home doubleheader
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Penn State Altoona Thursday afternoon, bringing the Wolverines' record to 9-5. Grove City dropped a 3-1 decision in the opener but rebounded for a 10-2, 6-inning win in the nightcap.
Senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) led Grove City's 11-hit barrage in the second game with a double, two singles and a pair of runs batted in while junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) doubled, singled and scored two runs.
Freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) added a pair of hits as Grove City jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the second game. In the bottom of the first, Atwood put Grove City ahead with a single that scored freshman Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale). Grove City then batted around in the second inning, scoring five more runs. All five runs came with two outs.
Junior Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) drew a bases-loaded walk while Atwood added a run-scoring single. Two wild pitches, a passed ball and an error helped contribute to Grove City's outburst, which included just three hits.
Romance belted a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Rice and Russell. Romance would later score on a wild pitch after stealing third base. Romance scored Grove City's 10th run in the sixth inning on an infield hit by sophomore Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex).
Sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win, pitching four innings. She allowed two earned runs. Atwood pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Atwood took the loss in the opener in relief of Carlson as Penn State Altoona scored two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the seventh, breaking a 1-1 tie. Romance doubled while junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled, accounting for Grove City's only two hits in the game. Carlson pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and no earned runs.
Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday at Washington and Jefferson. The PAC doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
