Wolverines whip Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team concluded Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of PAC rival Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon. Grove City (11-5, 7-3 PAC) picked up a 4-0 win in the first game, then rolled to a 7-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) fired a two-hit shutout in the opener while sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) spun a three-hit shutout in game two. Atwood supplied the bulk of Grove City's offense in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double and five runs batted in. Her three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth helped seal the victory.

In the opener, junior Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) opened the top of the second with a double and scored on a single from freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Two President errors led to Grove City's second run in the fourth inning.

Grove City picked up two more runs in the sixth as Atwood drove in freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) with a single. Atwood then scored on Romance's second double of the game.

The Wolverines seized a 1-0 lead in the third as Atwood singled in freshman Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale). In the fourth, junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) knocked in Carlson while an error forced in Grove City's third run. Atwood doubled in Rice to finish off the inning.

Rice went 2-for-4 and scored twice while Carlson was 2-for-3.

The shutout is the first in Flick's collegiate career. She did not walk a batter in seven innings.

Grove City visits Geneva Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.
