Grove City runs win streak to 5
KOPPEL, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 13-5 Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of NAIA Geneva in non-conference action. The Wolverines, winners of five straight, picked up a 9-2 win in the opener, then secured a 6-3, 8-inning triumph in the second game.
Freshman center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) sparked Grove City in the opener from her leadoff spot, going 4-for-4 and scoring three runs. Senior pitcher Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) added three hits and drove in four runs, including a two-run single in Grove City's five-run fifth inning.
Meanwhile, junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) went doubled, singled and drove in three runs in the first game. Romance highlighted Grove City's three-run third inning with a two-run double. In the sixth, Rice scored on Atwood's third run-scoring hit of the game.
Grove City finished with 13 hits in the game. Atwood earned the victory, firing her ninth complete game of the season. She struck out five and permitted seven hits in seven innings.
Atwood also earned the victory in the nightcap in relief of sophomore starter Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). Flick allowed two earned runs in six innings while Atwood picked up the win with two scoreless innings.
Freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) roped a two-single in the top of the eighth to put Grove City ahead for good. Carlson scored Grove City's sixth run on a RBI single by junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
In the fourth, Cozad cracked a two-run double that broke a 1-1 tie. Geneva cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, then tied the game in the sixth.
Flick doubled twice while junior Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby) also doubled. Atwood also had a pair of hits.
Grove City will visit Penn State Behrend Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
