Behrend sweeps Grove City

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Behrend Tuesday afternoon in their final tune-up for this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament.

Grove City (13-7) fell in the opener 6-3, then dropped a 2-0 decision in the nightcap. The losses snapped Grove City's five game winning streak.

In the opener, Grove City left nine runners on base and could not overcome an early 5-2 deficit. Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) stroked back-to-back doubles.

Atwood scored Grove City's second run on a single from junior Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern). However, Behrend responded with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the first, aided by three Grove City errors. Four of the five runs were unearned.

Grove City cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth as Atwood singled in junior Abigail Russell (Shelbina, Mo./South Shelby). Atwood doubled twice and also had two singles in her 4-for-4 effort while sophomore Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) and junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) both went 2-for-3.

Atwood took the loss, allowing six runs in six innings. Only two of the runs were earned.

Grove City managed just two hits in the second game. Sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) doubled while freshman Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) singled. Freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the loss, allowing one earned run in six innings.

Grove City will play either Westminster or Waynesburg in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals Friday morning at 10 a.m. at top-seeded Bethany. Grove City is the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
