Grove City stays alive in PAC Tournament

BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Grove City College softball team remained alive in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Friday by going 1-1. Second-seeded Grove City (14-8) opened the day with a 2-1 loss to No. 3 seed Westminster. However, the Wolverines rebounded to eliminated fourth-seeded Thiel, 6-2.

Grove City will play Waynesburg in a loser's bracket game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Against Thiel, Grove City fell behind 2-0 in the third inning but cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third as senior Allison Atwood (Warren, Pa./Warren) singled in junior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), who reached base after being hit by a pitch.

The Wolverines then stormed ahead in the fifth, combining four hits with four Thiel errors. Cozad tied the game by scoring on a single from freshman Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Bogusz came home on another Atwood single while junior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) followed with an RBI double.

Sophomore Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) reached on an error and scored on a single from sophomore first baseman Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex), capping the Wolverines' rally.

In the sixth, Grove City added an insurance run as Cozad again reached on a hit batsman and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Atwood. Flick earned the pitching victory, allowing no earned runs in five innings. Atwood recorded the final six outs to pick up her second save of the year.

Atwood took the loss against Westminster Friday morning, yielding runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Grove City trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh but halved the lead as freshman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) doubled and eventually scored on a Cozad groundout.

Atwood allowed just four hits in the loss. Grove City generated just five hits in the loss.
