Wolverines earn first PAC win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader at conference rival Waynesburg Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines (4-10, 1-1 PAC) dropped a 3-2 verdict in the opener but bounced back for a 5-3 victory over Waynesburg in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth as senior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) belted a two-run triple, scoring sophomore center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and senior second baseman Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer). Rice and Moose had opened the inning with singles.

Grove City took a 3-0 lead in the third as Rice tripled in junior first baseman Alicia Stefanak (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex). A Moose single scored Rice while Romance scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) earned the win in relief of junior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). Carlson pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Flick allowed just two earned runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Wolverines left 12 runners on base in dropping the opener. Grove City trailed 2-0 entering the top of the fifth but senior right fielder Steph Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) cracked a leadoff triple and scored on a two-out single from senior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Rice singled and eventually scored on a Romance hit. Briggs, Carlson, Cozad, Rice and Romance all had two hits in Game One. Junior Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the loss for Grove City, allowing three earned runs in six innings.
