Grove City sweeps Pitt-Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team swept host Pitt-Greensburg Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader, 2-0 and 6-2. The wins extend Grove City's win streak to three games.

In the opener, junior left-hander Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired a one-hit shutout, retiring the final 20 batters she faced. Smith fanned nine in seven innings, notching her sixth complete game of the season. Grove City (6-10) pounded a dozen hits in the nightcap as freshman Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) and senior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each had three hits in the win.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the opener as senior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern) and junior pitcher/DH Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) cracked back-to-back doubles. Flick opened the top of the seventh with a triple and scored on a single by senior second baseman Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer).

Cozad helped ignite Grove City's four-run third inning in the second game by opening the inning with a single and stolen base. Cozad then scored on a run-scoring hit from sophomore Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Later in the inning, sophomore center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) scored on an error to make it 2-0. Hughes doubled the lead to 4-0 by stroking a two-run single that scored Moose and Flick. Cozad singled and eventually scored Grove City's fifth run on an error in the fourth inning while a Hughes groundout in the seventh scored Romance.

Flick earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings. She allowed one earned run and struck out three. Sophomore Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Grove City.
