Wolverines, Lady Titans split
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Westminster Tuesday afternoon. Grove City (7-11, 2-4 PAC) pulled out a 1-0 Game One win while Westminster (16-4, 1-1 PAC) claimed an 8-2 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, junior left-hander Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) blanked Westminster, allowing just five hits and no walks in a complete-game effort. It is Smith's second shutout in as many days.
The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as senior left fielder Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Grove City preserved the lead in the top of the fifth as sophomore center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) threw Westminster's Maria Joseph out at the plate.
Westminster jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Grove City starter Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau). Flick took the loss, allowing five earned runs in two innings. Sophomore Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) pitched four innings in relief, allowing one unearned run.
Flick and Rice had Grove City's two hits in the nightcap, both singles. Flick and senior Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) each scored unearned runs for Grove City.
The Wolverines will visit Thiel next Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
