Pennell earns All-Region; 3 named All-PAC
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College freshman softball player Lauren Pennell (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned Second Team All-Central Region honors Tuesday afternoon from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). It is Pennell's second postseason honor in the last week.
Friday, Pennell, junior second baseman Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) all earned Second Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference from the league's head coaches.
Pennell earned Second Team All-Region at designated player after leading Grove City with a .417 batting average. Pennell set a new single-season Grove City record with 45 hits. She also led the team with 63 total bases and a .583 slugging percentage.
Pennell led the PAC with a school-record 18 doubles this year. She also ranked third in the conference in batting average and fourth in both slugging and on-base percentage.
As a pitcher, Pennell set a new Grove City record with 23 appearances this year. She tossed 17 complete games, including four shutouts. Her 22 starts tied for the conference lead. Pennell finished the year with a 6-15 record and a 3.63 earned run average. She struck out 82 batters in 133 innings.
Fisher hit .286 this year and drove in a Grove City-record 36 runs. She finished second in the PAC with 36 runs batted in and also tied for seventh in the conference with a team-leading 29 runs scored. Fisher belted 15 doubles, three triples and one home run this year. Her 58 total bases ranked eighth in the conference.
Fisher also earned Second Team All-PAC as a freshman in 2006.
Greiner finished ninth in the conference with a .367 batting average this season. Her 40 hits this year are the third-most in program history. A four-year starter at catcher, Greiner collected 10 doubles and one home run this year. It is Greiner's second consecutive All-PAC Second Team honor.
Grove City finished the season 15-23 overall, including a 6-8 mark in PAC play. The Wolverines posted a five-game improvement within the conference this season, along with a six-win improvement overall under second-year head coach Chelle Fuss. Grove City's 38 games played this year are the most in program history.
