Grove City rallies at Thiel for doubleheader split
GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Thiel Thursday afternoon at Cooper Field. In the opener, Grove City nearly rallied from a 6-0 deficit but fell 7-5. However, Grove City (8-12, 3-5 PAC) stormed back from an early 4-0 hole in the nightcap for a 12-7 win over Thiel.
In Game Two, Grove City forged a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fourth, then added three runs in the fifth. The Wolverines then used a five-run sixth inning to seal the victory. Six of Grove City's seven hits in the nightcap were doubles, including a pair by sophomore center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale).
Rice opened the four-run fourth with a double and scored on a single from classmate Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Bogusz drove in four runs in the nightcap. She eventually came home on a groundout by senior shortstop Rachel Romance (East Springfield, Pa./Northwestern). Two Thiel errors led to two more Wolverine runs in the inning.
Romance's two-run double in the fifth helped Grove City assume a 7-4 lead. Grove City added five more runs in the sixth as senior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), junior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and Bogusz all cracked doubles. Two more Thiel errors helped fuel the outburst.
Bogusz, Rice, senior Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer), Flick and Cozad all scored two runs each while Romance finished with three runs batted in. Junior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) earned the win, firing a complete-game. Smith allowed 11 hits but did not issue a walk.
In the opener, Grove City fell behind 6-0 before scoring three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Bogusz belted a bases-loaded triple in the fifth, cutting Thiel's lead in half. In the seventh, Moose tripled and scored on an error that allowed Romance to reach. Romance scored Grove City's fifth run on a single by senior right fielder Steph Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City). The Wolverines eventually moved the tying run to second base but could not continue the rally.
Freshman Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) tripled and singled for Grove City, which left 10 runners on base in the opener. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the loss for the Wolverines, allowing three earned runs in two innings. Smith pitched the final four innings and allowed two earned runs.
Grove City will host Geneva Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
