Tornadoes take two from Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team fell to 8-14 overall Tuesday afternoon as visiting Geneva swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader from the Wolverines at College Field. The NAIA member Golden Tornadoes won the opener 3-0, then held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but could not erase the 2-1 deficit. Sophomores Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) each doubled and singled in Game Two. Bogusz singled in Rice in the third inning, cutting Geneva's lead to 2-1. In the seventh, Bogusz cracked a two-out double, but was stranded at second base.

Sophomore Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) fired 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap. She allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter. Junior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

In the opener, the Wolverines managed just a pair of singles. Senior Steph Briggs (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and freshman Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) each had one of the hits. Junior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) allowed just two earned runs in seven innings but took the defeat.

The first game featured a 53-minute weather delay in the top of the sixth while the second game was stopped for 10 minutes in the fourth inning. Grove City will visit La Roche Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.
