Shirey, Morris honored by conference

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Two Grove City College softball players earned All-Presidents' Athletic Conference recognition from the league's head coaches Monday night at their postseason meeting. Freshman shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) earned First Team All-PAC and freshman catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) merited Honorable Mention status.

Shirey made an immediate impact this season for Grove City (19-21, 7-11 PAC) as she led the Wolverines in numerous offensive categories. Shirey led Grove City with a .430 batting average and set a new single-season program records with five home runs and 52 total hits. She also led the team in runs batted in (30), total bases (85), slugging percentage (.702), extra-base hits (19), triples (4) and on-base percentage (.462).

Shirey started all 40 games this year and finished with 29 runs scored. She ranked second in the conference in total bases and third in the league in batting average, slugging percentage and hits.

Morris concluded her freshman season with a .353 batting average, which ranked second on the team. She collected 41 hits this year and led Grove City with 13 doubles. She drove in 27 runs and led the squad with three sacrifice flies. Morris started all 40 games in 2012.

Geneva pitcher Julie DiLonardo received the conference's Player of the Year award and Geneva coach Van Zanic received Coach of the Year honors.
