Grove City splits with Presidents

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Washington and Jefferson College Monday afternoon. Grove City toppled the Presidents, 2-1, in the opener but dropped a 6-0 decision in the nightcap.

Grove City (9-17 overall) rallied for the victory in the opener as freshman catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) belted a two-run single that scored senior left fielder Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale). Rice had two of Grove City's four hits in the win.

Junior left-hander Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) earned the win, allowing one run in seven innings. Smith struck out six and walked two.

Grove City managed just three hits in the nightcap as Washington and Jefferson (19-15) earned the split. Four Wolverine errors led to five unearned runs. Rice doubled for the Wolverines. Junior pitcher Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) allowed one earned run in four innings while sophomore Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) yielded a pair of unearned runs in two innings.

The teams were scheduled to play a conference doubleheader Saturday but weather postponed all three scheduled PAC doubleheaders that were scheduled. Only Grove City and Washington and Jefferson were able to make up their doubleheader, thus, the games will not count in the PAC standings. The seedings for this week's PAC Championship Tournament were set based on the teams' eight-game PAC record.

Grove City will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will play at No. 4 Waynesburg in a quarterfinal game. The Wolverines will close the regular season Tuesday against visiting Pitt-Bradford at 2 p.m.
