Prexies eliminate Grove City in extra innings

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Grove City College softball team forced extra innings with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the seventh but Washington and Jefferson ousted the Wolverines from the 2005 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Tournament, 7-3, in 8 innings in a loser's bracket game.

Washington and Jefferson's Stephanie Spisak belted a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth for the victory. Grove City finishes the season 10-20.

Grove City trailed 3-1 entering the top of the seventh but with two outs, sophomore Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) started the rally with a single and advanced on an error. Senior Abby Moose (New Wilmington, Pa./Mercer) followed with a walk. Senior Kelly Cozad (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled in Carlson while Moose came home on a two-out single by sophomore Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale).

In the eighth, Washington and Jefferson loaded the bases against Grove City starter Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington). Carlson relieved Smith with two outs but allowed Spisak's game-winning hit. Smith allowed four earned runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Cozad went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in while Moose scored twice and also doubled. Smith also tied Michelle Kirin's school record for single-season appearances with 21. Kirin set the record in 1988 and tied it the following year.
