Grove City opens with split
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Grove City College softball team opened the 2006 season by splitting a pair of games against Adrian (Mich.) at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex Wednesday afternoon. Grove City (1-1) opened the doubleheader with a 7-1 loss but bounced back for a 4-3 win over Adrian in the nightcap.
In the second game, freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild a pitch. Fisher went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in Game Two.
Senior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while sophomore right fielder Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) went 2-for-3 in the victory. Freshman pitcher Julia Coulombe (Scottdale, Ariz./Chaparral) earned the victory, allowing three earned runs in seven innings.
In the opener, Fisher doubled as a part of a 3-for-4 outing while junior Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Senior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in six innings.
Grove City will play NAIA Bethel (Ind.) Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
