Wolverines sweep Penn State Beaver

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Penn State Beaver Thursday afternoon at College Field, improving to 5-3 on the season. The Wolverines won the first game, 8-0, then secured a 14-1, 5-inning win in the nightcap.

In the opener, senior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired a 4-hit shutout and improved to 3-1 on the season.

Junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) doubled twice and scored three runs for Grove City in Game One while freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled and singled. Junior Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and freshman Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) both drove in two runs.

In Game Two, the Wolverines broke the game open with a 7-run third inning. A three-run double from senior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) helped ignite the outburst. Bogusz doubled twice as part of a 3-for-4 effort. She also drove in three runs. Rice went 3-for-3, scored four runs and drove in a pair of runs.

Junior infielder Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) belted an inside-the-park home run to lead off the second inning. It is her first collegiate homer. Sophomore Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) doubled, singled and scored twice while freshman Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) scored a pair of runs.

Junior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) pitched three innings and allowed just two hits and one run. Coulombe pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City will host Penn State Altoona Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
