Grove City takes two from Penn State Altoona

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team improved to 7-3 Monday afternoon by taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Penn State Altoona at College Field. The Wolverines captured a 7-2 win in the opener, then completed the sweep with an 11-2 victory in the nightcap. The nightcap lasted 4 1/2 innings.

Junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) led Grove City's 14-hit attack in Game One with a 4-for-4 effort. Rice doubled, scored twice and stole bases to help ignite the Wolverines. Junior outfielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) belted a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Wolverines an early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) went 3-for-4 in the win while sophomore Kristen Hughes (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) doubled and singled. Senior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) earned the win by pitching six innings. Senior pitcher Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) pitched a scoreless seventh.

In Game Two, Grove City broke the game open with a nine-run second inning. Rice and Bogusz both went 3-for-4 in the win. Rice scored twice while Bogusz doubled. Freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Greiner doubled, singled and knocked in three runs while Hughes cracked a bases-clearing double. Flick singled and scored twice while junior infielder Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) also roped a pair of hits.

Flick earned the win by pitching three innings. Freshman Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) added two innings in relief.

Grove City will play at Hiram Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
