Geneva takes two from Grove City

KOPPEL, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Geneva Thursday afternoon. Geneva (13-9) won the opener in eight innings, 3-2, then pulled out the nightcap by an identical 3-2 score.

In the opener, Grove City (7-6-1) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on junior Paula Rice's two-run double that scored freshman Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and junior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Coulombe and Carlson opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

However, Geneva tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then won it in the bottom of the eighth. Senior starting pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs. Senior reliever Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) took the loss in relief of Smith.

Rice doubled and singled in the opener while sophomore catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) went 2-for-3.

In Game Two, Grove City forged a 2-2 tie in the top of the third as freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled in sophomore Kristen Hughes (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and junior Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Hughes and Bogusz both singled earlier in the inning.

Rice doubled and singled while Greiner again went 2-for-3. Coulombe took the defeat in relief of Flick. Coulombe pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon against visiting Thomas More at 1 p.m.
