Thomas More sweeps Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team fell to 7-8-1 overall Saturday afternoon as visiting Thomas More swept the Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Thomas More (14-10-1, 3-1 PAC) won the first game, 7-3, then completed the sweep with a 7-6, 8-inning victory in Game Two.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Senior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) helped spark the inning with a double while junior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) and sophomore right fielder Kristen Hughes (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) each cracked RBI singles.

However, Thomas More DH Rachel Mudd belted a solo home run in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth to give Thomas More a 4-3 lead. The Saints added three insurance runs in the sixth. Grove City loaded the bases in the seventh but Settle grounded out to end the game.

Senior Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the defeat, allowing seven runs in six innings.

In Game Two, the Wolverines forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Following singles by juniors Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale), junior catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) belted a two-run double that tied the game 5-5.

Thomas More scored twice in the eighth inning to take a 7-5 lead. A Settle sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) but the Wolverines could get no closer.

Earlier, Hughes belted a three-run homer in the fourth that trimmed Thomas More's lead to 4-3.

Flick took the loss in relief of starter Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral). Flick allowed one earned run in 3 1/3 innings. Coulombe yielded four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Smith also pitched in relief and recorded the final out. Rice went 2-for-4 while Coulombe and Carlson each had two singles.

Grove City will host La Roche Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
