Grove City earns split at Behrend

ERIE, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team earned a non-conference doubleheader split at Penn State Behrend (26-6) Wednesday afternoon. Grove City (8-11-1) dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener but rallied for a 3-2, 9-inning victory in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 2-1 entering the seventh. However, junior catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) opened the seventh with a single and after a wild pitch, scored on a two-out single by junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale).

In the ninth, senior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) scored on freshman Julia Coulombe's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) base hit. Flick opened the inning at second base, as per international tie-breaker stipulations. Flick drove in Grove City's first run of the game with a fourth-inning single that scored sophomore Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson).

Coulombe earned the pitching victory, firing five hitless innings of relief. Flick started and yielded one earned run in four innings.

Senior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the loss in the opener, despite allowing just one run and six hits in six innings. Rice had two of Grove City's five hits in the game.

Grove City will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon with a PAC doubleheader at Washington and Jefferson. The Wolverines will then host Waynesburg Saturday at 1 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
