Wolverines rally past Thiel, 15-7

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of 2006 Tuesday afternoon, rallying for a 15-7, 6-inning home win over Thiel at College Field in the first game of a PAC doubleheader. Grove City collected a season-high 21 hits in the victory.

The second game was postponed due to rain.

Grove City (9-12-1, 1-5 PAC) trailed 4-0 after the top of the first but quickly broke through as junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) led off with a home run, her first of the season. Rice also doubled and scored three runs as part of a 5-for-5 effort.

The Wolverines then pulled to within 4-3 in the third inning as sophomore catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) cracked a two-run double. Grove City took the lead for good in the fifth with an eight-run outburst. A double by senior first baseman Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) helped ignite the rally. Grove City pounded out seven hits during the inning.

After Thiel closed Grove City's lead to 12-7 in the top of the sixth, Grove City put the game away with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Following singles by freshman pitcher Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and junior third baseman Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville), sophomore Kristen Hughes (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) belted a double. Hughes later scored on a fielder's choice from freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Carlson also doubled and scored three runs as part of her 3-for-4 outing while Coulombe also collected three hits. Fisher went 2-for-5 and scored twice while freshman right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) singled, walked and drove in two runs.

Coulombe earned the win by allowing six earned runs in six innings.

Grove City will host PAC-leading Waynesburg in a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m.
