Waynesburg takes two from Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions against Waynesburg Wednesday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at College Field. Waynesburg (14-12, 7-1 PAC) pulled out a 3-2 win in the opener, then held off Grove City (9-14-1, 1-7 PAC) for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City freshman pitcher Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) fired a two-hitter but Waynesburg converted two Grove City errors into a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Grove City cut the lead to 2-1 in the seventh as senior Jes Flick (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) doubled and scored on a Coulombe single. However, the Wolverines could get no closer.

Flick and sophomore catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) both went 2-for-3 for Grove City in the second game.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game One as Greiner drove home junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) with a sacrifice fly while junior left fielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored on a wild pitch.

Waynesburg tied the game with two runs in the third, then took the lead with a single run in the seventh against Coulombe. Senior Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) started the first game for Grove City and allowed one earned run in five innings. Coulombe allowed one run and three hits in two innings.

Greiner went 2-for-2 to lead Grove City offensively.

The Wolverines will play an exhibition doubleheader against Cuyahoga Community College Thursday before hosting Washington and Jefferson Friday in the completion of a suspended game.
