Wolverines sweep Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Grove City College softball team earned its first sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Bethany since 2000 Saturday afternoon as Grove City took both ends of a doubleheader against the Bison. Grove City won the opener, 4-2, then pulled out a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Grove City (11-15-1, 3-8 PAC) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning as junior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) roped a two-run double that scored sophomore Kristen Hughes (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and senior pitcher Sarah Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington). Smith singled and Hughes doubled prior to Rice's eventual game-winning hit.

Smith earned the pitching victory for Grove City, allowing one earned run in seven innings. Smith (5-5) scattered 11 hits and did not walk a batter.

Freshman shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 2-for-3 in the win while junior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) and freshman Julia Coulombe (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) each had run-scoring singles.

In the nightcap, Grove City trailed 4-3 in the fifth but rallied to take the lead with a pair of runs in the inning. Rice doubled and eventually scored on an error while Settle singled in sophomore catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). Greiner doubled earlier in the inning.

Rice led off the game with a solo homer, her second of the season. Junior Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Fisher followed with back-to-back doubles. In the third, Fisher singled and scored on a Settle single. Fisher went 3-for-3 while Settle finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Coulombe earned the win by allowing three earned runs in seven innings. She is now 4-5 on the season.

Grove City will wrap up the 2006 season with a single game at Thiel Tuesday, May 2.
