Bearcats trim Grove City, 11-9

LATROBE, Pa. - The Grove City College softball team opened the northern portion of the 2007 schedule Tuesday afternoon with an 11-9 loss to host Saint Vincent in the first half of a doubleheader between Presidents' Athletic Conference members. Inclement weather postponed the nightcap to Wednesday. The second game will be played Wednesday in Grove City at 4 p.m.

Grove City took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning as junior Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) belted a three-run homer. However, Saint Vincent responded with a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the third.

Grove City (2-5) reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth by posting six runs on six hits. Senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) cut the lead to 7-5 with a two-run single that scored senior pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and sophomore right fielder Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). Following a bases loaded walk to Greiner, senior catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Saint Vincent again rallied against Carlson, though, scoring once in the home half of the fourth before pulling ahead with three runs in the fifth.

Junior left fielder Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) doubled twice, singled and scored twice for the Wolverines while Carlson doubled and singled. Rice and Risbon both singled twice while sophomore shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored twice. All nine Grove City batters had at least one hit.

Carlson took the pitching defeat, allowing 11 runs (all earned) in six innings. She struck out four.

Grove City's games against Saint Vincent do not count in the PAC standings due to Saint Vincent's provisional status in NCAA Division III. Wednesday game will be Grove City's 2007 home opener.
