Grove City earns split in home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the home portion of the 2007 season Thursday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with NAIA Ursuline at College Field. The Wolverines dropped the opener, 7-0, but rebounded for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned the victory in Game Two, allowing no earned runs in seven innings. Offensively, Fisher doubled and singled in the nightcap.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as junior Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) singled and scored on a double from senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale). Rice scored on a subsequent overthrow.

Ursuline tied the game with two unearned runs in the fifth but Grove City (3-6) retook the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ursuline limited Grove City to just three hits in the opener. Senior catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled while Fritz and Rice both singled. Senior pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) absorbed the loss, allowing seven runs in seven innings.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday against visiting Washington & Jefferson. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
