Thiel takes two from Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 0-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon by dropping both ends of a PAC doubleheader at Thiel. Thiel pulled out a 3-2 win in the opener, then secured a 9-4 victory in the second game.

In the opener, sophomore pitcher Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) allowed no earned runs in six innings of work. However, Grove City managed just three hits in the opener.

Grove City cut the Thiel lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning as junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) tripled and senior Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) followed with a double.

Grove City collected 11 hits in the nightcap but could not overcome an early 9-1 deficit. Thiel, the designated visiting team in the nightcap, scored four runs in the top of the first and eventually stretched the lead to 9-1 in the fourth inning.

Hughes went 3 for 4 with a double for Grove City while senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) also went 3 for 4. Freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) singled twice while senior shortstop Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) doubled. Bogusz drove in two runs.

Senior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) in two innings. Fisher pitched in relief and allowed one run in five innings.
