Westminster sweeps Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at PAC rival Westminster. Westminster earned a 6-0 win in the opener, then secured a 10-5 victory in the nightcap over Grove City.

In the nightcap, Grove City fell behind 7-2 but cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth. Grove City opened the inning with singles from senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and sophomore pitcher Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) followed with a double that scored Rice. Fisher scored on a passed ball while Hughes came home on an groundout by junior right fielder Krysten Fritz (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll).

However, Westminster sealed the win with three runs in the top of the seventh. Westminster was the designated visiting team in the second game.

Junior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) went 2-for-3 while Hughes scored twice. Senior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) in two innings. Fisher pitched five innings and surrendered three earned runs.

In the opener, Fisher absorbed the defeat after allowing six runs in six innings. Westminster limited Grove City (3-14, 0-6 PAC) to just two hits in Game One -- singles from freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and senior left fielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Grove City will host Franciscan Friday at 5 p.m. in a single non-conference game.
