Wolverines pick up two wins
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team posted its second doubleheader sweep of the 2007 season Friday evening, taking a pair of games from visiting Franciscan University at College Field. Grove City (5-14) won the opener 19-0 before taking a 13-1 decision in the nightcap. Both games lasted 4 1/2 innings due to the 8-run rule.
In Game One, senior pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) went 4 for 4 and also drove in three runs to help lead Grove City's 18-hit attack. Senior DH Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) collected three hits, including a double. Bogusz also drove in three runs. Senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) went 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Junior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) singled twice, drove in three runs and scored four times.
Also for Grove City, junior left fielder Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) tripled, singled and scored three runs while sophomore shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also scored three times.
Carlson earned the pitching victory, allowing just three hits in five innings.
Greiner drove in a career-high seven runs in the nightcap as Grove City completed the sweep. Greiner went 4 for 4 with a double. Sophomore second baseman Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) singled three times, walked once and scored four runs.
Fisher and senior Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) both doubled while freshman first baseman Sam Halstead (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver) singled and scored twice. Halstead also knocked in two runs.
Freshman Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central) pitched into the third and allowed one unearned run. Carlson pitched three scoreless innings of relief to secure the win.
Grove City will visit Waynesburg Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
