Wolverines split with Behrend

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team earned a split with visiting Penn State Behrend (17-10) Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at College Field. Grove City pulled out a 2-1 win in the opener but Behrend bounced back for a 4-2 win in the second game.

Sophomore pitcher Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of the opener and finished with a one-hitter, the first of her career. Fisher faced just 23 batters, two above the minimum. Fifteen of the 21 outs recorded came on groundouts.

Grove City trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth when senior left fielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) cracked a two-run double that scored senior shortstop Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) and freshman pinch runner Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central).

Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) added a double in the opener for Grove City. The victory extended Grove City's win streak to a season-high four games.

Behrend rebounded to take the second game despite managing just two earned runs against senior pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Carlson struck out a season-high six and walked just one batter in seven innings.

Grove City cut the Lions' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth by taking advantage of two Behrend errors in the inning. Freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) drove in Settle with a single, bring Grove City to within one. However, Grove City left the bases loaded in the sixth and also stranded two runners in the seventh.

Settle went 2 for 4 for Grove City in the nightcap. Behrend out-hit Grove City, 8-7.

Grove City (7-15) will visit Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
