Thomas More takes two from Wolverines

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College softball team fell to 7-17 overall Saturday with a pair of setbacks at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More. Thomas More earned a 9-0, 5-inning win in the opener before pulling out an 11-6 victory over Grove City in Game Two.

In the nightcap, junior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led Grove City's 10-hit attack with a home run, double, single and five runs batted in. Greiner's three-run homer in the top of the fifth tied the game at 5-5. However, Thomas More (21-8, 9-1 PAC) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and added four more runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Grove City (0-8 PAC) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) doubled in sophomore shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) later scored on a Greiner groundout.

Hughes doubled, singled and scored three runs in the nightcap for Grove City. Fisher scored twice while senior left fielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also doubled.

Fisher took the pitching defeat in relief of senior starter Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville). Fisher allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Carlson surrendered five runs in 2 1/3 innings. Thomas More belted five home runs in the win.

Thomas More limited Grove City to just three hits in the opener. Fisher, senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) all singled. Fisher started in the circle and took the loss as Thomas More collected five runs in the top of the first. Carlson pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Grove City will visit La Roche Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
