Bethany takes two from Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team wrapped up Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a pair of setbacks against PAC rival Bethany at College Field. Visiting Bethany pulled out a 6-3, 8-inning victory in Game One of the conference doubleheader. The Bison then rallied for a 6-4 win in the nightcap over Grove City.

Grove City (8-20, 1-11 PAC) forced extra innings in the opener by scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) doubled and scored on a two-out single by junior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). In the eighth, Bethany's Kara O'Dell cracked a run-scoring double and Jillian Wright followed with a two-run homer.

Grove City trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth but scored twice as freshman Sam Halstead (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver) drove in freshman Cassie Narbe (Orchard Park, N.Y./Christian Central) and freshman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a wild pitch.

Greiner, Miller and senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) all singled twice in the opener. Senior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) took the pitching defeat in relief of sophomore starter Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). Carlson allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings. Fisher allowed three hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Fisher did issue eight walks, however.

In Game Two, Grove City charged out to a 4-1 lead before Bethany rallied in the middle innings to complete the sweep. Hughes doubled and singled while Miller went 2 for 3. Rice added a double. Greiner and Hughes both had RBI singles in the third, helping Grove City claim a 4-1 lead. Bethany, the designated home team, scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. The Bison then took the lead for good in the fifth with a three-run outburst.

Carlson allowed four earned runs in six innings for Grove City but suffered the pitching defeat.

Grove City will visit Pitt-Bradford Monday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
