Pitt-Bradford tops Grove City twice

BRADFORD, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Monday afternoon as the host Panthers earned 9-6 and 5-0 wins over Grove City (8-22).

Grove City collected 11 hits in the opener and held a 6-3 lead in the second inning. However, Pitt-Bradford eventually tied the game in the fourth and then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) belted a two-run double in the top of the first, giving Grove City an early lead. Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) keyed Grove City's four-run second inning with a two-run single.

Senior left fielder Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled twice in Game One while junior catcher Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), senior center fielder Paula Rice (Fredericksburg, Ohio/Waynedale) and sophomore pitcher Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) each singled twice. Fisher also scored two runs.

Fisher took the pitching defeat, yielding seven earned runs in six innings.

In the nightcap, Pitt-Bradford limited Grove City to just four hits. Senior Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) doubled while Fisher, Rice and sophomore Rachael Risbon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) all singled. Carlson took the pitching loss after allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings. Fisher pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City will close the home portion of the 2007 schedule Tuesday against Penn State Beaver at 4 p.m.
