Wolverines split with Penn State Beaver
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball concluded the home portion of the 2007 schedule Tuesday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Penn State Beaver (29-6). Grove City dropped the opener 9-4 but rebounded for a 10-2, 5-inning win in the nightcap.
In Game Two, freshman third baseman Laura Miller (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) highlighted Grove City's six-run third inning by belting a three-run home run. It is Miller's first collegiate home run.
Grove City broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third as senior catcher Kristy Bogusz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) roped a two-run double. Bogusz also gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly. Junior Kristen Hughes (Volant, Pa./Grove City) doubled and singled while sophomore shortstop Amy Fisher (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior second baseman Andrea Settle (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) both went 2 for 2. Fisher scored three times while Settle drove in two runs.
Senior pitcher Lauren Carlson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) allowed just three hits in five innings to earn the win. She struck out five and did not allow a walk.
Penn State Beaver used a four-run sixth inning to break open Game One. Fisher tossed a complete game, but took the loss after allowing six earned runs in seven innings. Settle doubled and singled to lead Grove City's seven-hit effort in the opener.
Grove City (9-23) trailed 3-0 after the first inning but eventually tied the game at 3-3 in the third. Junior Abby Greiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) laced a run-scoring single while Miller put down a successful squeeze bunt in the second. A Hughes sacrifice fly in the third tied the game. However, Penn State Beaver scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead.
Grove City will wrap up the 2007 season Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader at La Roche at 3 p.m.
